Experience
I received a 460 Writing score, 470 Math score and a 460 Reading score on the SATs as a 16 year old. I would like to use my knowledge to be able to help kids with the subjects they are struggling with. I have taken up to Algebra 2 as well as an Applied Math class which is equivalent to Algebra 2 but more of a modern day applied math. When I was just a 14/15 year old sophomore in high school, I was blessed to be selected to be a part of the Lemelson-MIT Foundation. Our Lynden InvenTeam, one of just 12 other teams in the nation, of 7 high school students was granted $10,000 to build and showcase our invention in Boston, Massachusetts at Eurekafest in front of all the other teams, their professors, mentors and advisors. Our team was selected as one of the top four most outstanding and inspiring inventions, and were granted the honor of exclusively presenting our invention. Our Lynden InvenTeam invention is a 3 wheeled recumbent tricycle with a carbon fiber composite frame. The trike has an active leaning suspension which allows riders to curve into corners just like a bicycle, but have more stability. Our invention was built for a girl at our school who has Spina Bifida. People who have physical limitations such as Spina Bifida cannot ride a regular bicycle. With our invention they can enjoy the experience of riding a bike, while getting a good core body workout. We were lucky enough to get attention from Janicki Industries, Alcoa and Boeing. We were able to get an Exclusive tour of Boeing. Janicki gave us a tour as well as donating any 2-twill carbon fiber scrap they had. Throughout this whole process, since my responsibility was our teams Media Liaison/ Designer, we got national recognition. I was quoted in Popular Science Magazine in our teams two page spread. We had a larger segment on The New Day Talk show in Seattle, Washington. Several news stations and even a radio station called us to give information about our invention. My favorite experience for me, since I’ve never taken a formal English course that the average student takes, was when I was just 15 years old I wrote and published (all on my own) a two page article in Recumbent and Tandem Riders Magazine based out of….California. Just before we left for Boston to present, we settled our official Patent Pending. We, a team of 7 high school students nabbed a patent pending.
